Ma’nene is a traditional Torajan ritual associated with honoring deceased family members. During the ceremony, families gather to visit ancestral graves, clean and care for the bodies of their deceased relatives, and dress them in new clothes.
The ritual reflects the strong connection between Torajan families and their ancestors. Rather than viewing death simply as an ending, traditional Toraja culture maintains a continuing relationship between the living and those who have passed away.
The timing of the Ma’nene ritual varies between different Torajan communities. Some areas conduct the ceremony approximately every three years, while others may hold it every five years, depending on local traditions and agreements.
Because it is not performed continuously throughout the year, witnessing Ma’nene can be a rare travel experience. Visitors should approach the ceremony respectfully because it is first and foremost a sacred family and community tradition, not simply a tourist attraction.
Day 1 – Makassar to Rantepao
The adventure begins on 20 September 2026.
At 5:00 PM, travelers will be picked up at Makassar Airport before continuing to the representative office of the sleeper bus in Makassar.
At approximately 8:00 PM, the group will board a sleeper bus heading toward Rantepao. Traveling by sleeper bus makes the overnight journey more comfortable, allowing passengers to relax and sleep during the trip.
The journey takes several hours through the mountainous landscape of South Sulawesi. By approximately 7:00 AM the following morning, travelers will arrive in Rantepao, the cultural heart of Toraja.
The overnight sleeper bus is also an interesting part of the experience because it allows travelers to travel between Makassar and Toraja without losing an entire daytime period on the road.
Day 2 – Experience the Ma’nene Ritual in Tongang Riu
On 21 September 2026, the cultural experience begins early.
At 7:00 AM, travelers will leave Rantepao by local vehicle and travel toward Tongang Riu Sesean Saloara, where the Ma’nene ritual will take place.
The drive provides an introduction to the beautiful scenery of Toraja, with green hills, traditional villages, agricultural landscapes, and distinctive Torajan architecture along the way.
At approximately 9:00 AM, we will arrive at the Ma’nene location in Tongang Riu. Here, travelers will have the opportunity to witness the traditional ritual and observe how local families preserve their ancestral customs.
Photography should always be conducted respectfully and according to local guidance. Our special Ma’nene guide will help explain the cultural meaning of the ceremony and provide guidance about appropriate visitor behavior.
After experiencing the ritual, the journey continues at approximately 3:00 PM toward Loko Mata and other attractions around Batutumonga.
Batutumonga is famous for its spectacular mountain scenery. Located in the highlands of Toraja, the area provides breathtaking views of valleys, villages, rice fields, and surrounding mountains.
At 6:00 PM, we will continue to the accommodation in Batutumonga for an overnight stay.
Day 3 – Second Day of the Ma’nene Experience
The morning of 22 September 2026 provides another opportunity to experience the Ma’nene tradition.
At 8:00 AM, we will return to Tongang Riu Sesean Saloara to witness the second day of the ritual.
Experiencing the ceremony across different stages can provide travelers with a deeper understanding of the traditions and the role of family and community in Torajan culture.
The Ma’nene ritual is not only about the physical care of ancestors. It is also an expression of family remembrance, respect, identity, and continuity between generations.
After the cultural experience, we will leave Tongang Riu at approximately 3:00 PM and travel back toward Rantepao.
At around 6:00 PM, we will check in at accommodation in Rantepao and have time to relax after two days of cultural exploration.
Day 4 – Explore the Highlights of Toraja
The final day, 23 September 2026, is dedicated to exploring some of Toraja's most famous cultural and historical destinations.
At approximately 8:00 AM, our full-day tour begins.
Kete Kesu
Our first destination is Kete Kesu, one of Toraja's best-known traditional villages. The village is famous for its traditional Tongkonan houses, which have distinctive boat-shaped roofs and elaborate decorations.
Kete Kesu provides an excellent opportunity to learn about traditional Torajan architecture, community life, and cultural heritage.
Londa
Next, we visit Londa, a famous Torajan burial site located in a limestone cliff and cave system.
The site demonstrates the unique burial traditions of Toraja and offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about the relationship between Torajan communities, ancestors, and traditional beliefs.
A local guide will accompany visitors at Londa, helping explain the history and cultural significance of the site.
Lemo
The journey continues to Lemo, another important burial destination in Toraja.
Lemo is famous for its cliffside burial chambers and tau-tau, wooden statues representing deceased members of the community. The combination of limestone cliffs, traditional burial structures, and surrounding landscapes makes Lemo one of the most memorable cultural sites in Toraja.
Buntu Burake
We will also visit Buntu Burake, a spectacular hilltop destination famous for its large statue of Jesus overlooking the Toraja landscape.
From the area around Buntu Burake, visitors can enjoy impressive panoramic views while experiencing another important cultural and religious landmark of the region.
Bori Kalimbuang
Another destination included in the tour is Bori Kalimbuang, a culturally significant megalithic site associated with Torajan traditional ceremonies.
The site contains impressive stone monuments and provides another perspective on the long history of Toraja's cultural traditions.
After exploring these destinations, we will continue our full-day journey before returning to Rantepao.
At approximately 7:00 PM, we will travel to the bus representative office and board the sleeper bus back to Makassar.
The bus will travel overnight, with an expected arrival in Makassar at approximately 7:00 AM on 24 September 2026.
The tour officially ends upon arrival in Makassar.
